As a result of growing up below the poverty line when I first discovered oil paints I was just 16 and already living out of home. Walking into my town’s local darkly lit art and office supply store the only colours I could afford with my measly Centrelink funds was a single tube of Titanium White and Lamp Black. Despite the stupid amount of life-altering experiences throughout the years, I still managed to keep painting with those same two tubes of paint, making them stretch as much as they would allow. In the meantime, I practised oil painting techniques in black and white and even when I studied art and learnt how to apply my colour theory skills to oils; I couldn’t help but stay loyal. with my monochromatic style.

Since then I have developed my technique further. by using different black & white pigments, and their varying transparencies, to focus more on value nuances and dramatic lighting. I often find it hard to verbalise my overwhelming and at times all-consuming internal dialogue, resulting in a lack of understanding and a strong sense of isolation. So with oil paint, I play into the drama. Painting myself without any clothing to put everything I am on vulnerable display, Including skulls in each work, I remind myself of the shortness and fragility of life as well as a symbol of my self reflection. There’s a theme of catharsis from knowing I overcame such experiences with each painting, eventually creating my own Ossuary.
