Whimsical Grotesqueries by Eddy Burger
- Artemisia Gallery & Event Space 248 High St Windsor Australia (map)
Whimsical grotesqueries is an exhibition of Eddy Burger’s A5 pen drawings – surreal, weird, spontaneous creations triggered by nothing or prompts or the intention to be weird and unusual, the naked outpourings of his warped yet fun-loving mind. A prolific drawer for years, but focussed on A5 for just over two. Recently he’s been enlarging and colouring his work, but here he presents his originals, plus a few same-size prints.
Eddy is an anti-realist and champion of the imagination, more interested in fantasy and metaphor than everyday life or true-to-life representations. Common subjects include animal liberation, environmentalism, war, misanthropy, nudity, queer, transgender, human-animal hybrids, fantastical creatures, cats, dinosaurs, science fiction, outer space, robots, spaceships, crassness, vomit, excrement, doodles, and anything else interesting.
Eddy is a multidisciplinary artist also practicing creative writing, theatre and singing. As a visual artist he is accomplished in drawing, painting, sculpture, visual poetry and periodicallyfocussed on luridly colourful digital photography. Recent solo exhibitions at Artemisia, Brunswick Street Gallery and Bergy Seltzer plus group shows 45downstairs, Linden, Red, Sol, Fitzroy Public Gallery, Videodays, Bar 303, Contemporary Art Society, Fitzroy Art Collective, BSG and Artemisia.
