To Protect by Alice Wang

  • Artemisia Gallery & Event Space 248 High Street Windsor, VIC, 3181 Australia (map)

My work explores the dynamic between the conscious and subconscious, the self and the others, the existent and the non-existent, reality and non-reality, in relation to femininity, domesticity, and absurdity. The use of soft materials depicts bodily textures and the fluidity of existence, and the discovery of tenderness. Each character I create becomes a persona of me and others that comes into my life.

With every stitch these pieces weave into my own life’s stories, entities for me to protect, each individual the centre of their own existence, but co-existing, and a similar story unfolds.

Cutting, sewing, and stitching together pieces that don’t belong, but make them belong, strange, deranged.

Mending is an act of protection and healing, but occasionally an obsession, but never too careful.
