This project is an exploration of my diasporic Jewish identity through oil paintings of my grandparents’ photographic slides. Using slide projectors, some paintings upscale the slides as physical objects, speaking to the gaze of the photographer in their domestic setting. Others recreate the photos themselves, capturing photographic errors such as blur, overexposure, and colour that has faded to a vibrant blue over time.
These material traces affirm the reality of each memory, providing a place for my grandparents and their community in the canon of cultural memory, and making my own lineage clearer.
