Living in the Suburbs by Hans Schiebold

Living in the Suburbs explores the quiet, persistent drama of architectural change. In this body of work, Hans Schiebold turns his attention to the evolving suburban landscape — a place where memory and modernity collide, where modest historical homes stand shoulder-to-shoulder with newly risen towers, and where the character of a neighbourhood is rewritten one building at a time.
Schiebold’s practice has long centred on the emotional resonance of architecture, but in recent years his work has expanded into three-dimensional forms that give these structures a physical presence. By sculpting façades, windows, doors, and architectural fragments, he invites viewers to engage with buildings not just as images, but as tactile objects carrying the marks of time. His miniature constructions echo the intimacy of lived spaces: weathered shutters, textured plaster, small balconies, and hand-painted details that honour the craftsmanship of older suburban homes.
Against these familiar forms, Schiebold places stark, geometric high-rises — simplified yet imposing — capturing the accelerating verticality of suburban development. The contrast is deliberate. The suburbs, once defined by low-lying houses and quiet streets, are now sites of rapid transformation. Schiebold’s work documents this shift with both affection and unease, revealing how new structures overshadow, interrupt, and sometimes erase the architectural stories that came before.
Through painting, sculpture, and hybrid works that blur the boundary between the two,Living in the Suburbs becomes a meditation on coexistence. It asks how communities absorb change, how buildings hold memory, and how the suburban environment becomes a layered archive of what we build, what we keep, and what we lose.
