Yokai by Julia Schmitt

  • Artemisia Gallery & Event Space 248 High Street Windsor, VIC, 3181 Australia (map)

This collection of work is inspired by my visit to Japan in February 2023. The quirky shop fronts of Osaka and the history of Kyoto are contrasted in this series of drawings.

When I was walking around rural Kansai I heard some schoolgirls whispering 'Yokai' which means 'demon' while looking at me. With red hair and being larger than most Japanese women I was certainly out of place. This inspired me to add little 'spirits' or Yokai within each drawing.

These spirits bind modern to old Japan and create a contrast between the real and imagined worlds in these works.
