Winter Blues by Penelope Metcalf

  • Artemisia Gallery & Event Space 248 High St Windsor Australia (map)

It is difficult to write about flowers given the degradation of much of our natural world.

Flowers are like nature’s jewels.

Their first appearance in the coldest months of winter always delights me.

Delicate crabapples, modest quince, little Hellebores and the extravagant Magnolia Soulangeana unfurl their blossoms along the footpaths and in the gardens of my street.

I take much pleasure in describing their delicate tonal shifts and elegant architecture.

Over the years I’ve found painting these small still lives one of the consolations of winter
