‘The Sea is my Muse’ collection contains lino cut prints touched with mixed media to depict the changing landscape of the sea. I use my observations of the sea to contemplate life. As I spent time by the sea and sketched small watercolour paintings in 2023, I reflected that the sea is at times a tempest and at other times calm and rhythmic. Just like life. Sorting through some old writings, I found a poem I wrote in 2014 where I played with the idea of the sea as a muse. It seemed fitting to bring the work together under this title.
The ceramic forms in this exhibition are inspired by the sea and reflect survival and growth from inhospitable environments. I have been drawn to clay for its transformative power. For me the strong solid and unrelenting form that emerges after firing is a metaphor for life. In my pieces I explore the tension between something that is strong and at the same time delicate.
