A Long Goodbye by Shelley Spangler

  • Artemisia Gallery & Event Space 248 High St Windsor Australia (map)

My first solo exhibition ‘A Long Goodbye’ explores the complexities of grief through memory and the domestic space. My experience with grief has been long and ongoing, grieving a loved one with Dementia is known as ‘the long goodbye’, referring to the changes to the person as the illness progresses. During this period of my life, my art began to document the cyclical and transient nature of the domestic.

Utilising watercolour, ink, printmaking, zines and animation the exhibition explores nostalgic motifs and symbols such as liminal spaces, light as memory, windows, hallways, shorelines, and a younger self. To preserve these vignettes the works linger on frozen moments in time, unaware of what is to come. The works inhabit moments that are often found on the periphery of our focus, finding the beauty in what becomes a part of daily rituals, a way to memorialise them.
