Melanie explores the political fierceness of textiles through the creation of colourful art dolls. Embroidery is no longer used to make 'pretty' 'homely' items, but rather bold statements of identity, dramatic expression and questions for the future of Women's Work. This collection of art dolls seeks to expand on the nature of feminine identity in its many facets.
Melanie (she/her) is an artist originally from Bendigo. Her work explores the nature of feminine identity within our constantly evolving society, using embroidery as a medium to question the historical use of textiles as a traditionally ‘female craft’. She particularly enjoys the use of vibrant colours and surrealist elements to make her art seem other-worldly. Elements of retro-futurism are also present in Melanie’s work, questioning the presence of technology in conjunction with feminism. Her work seeks to emphasize the human interactions of art creation, focusing on hand embellishments. She draws inspiration from artists such as Mirka Mora, Frida Kahlo and Maria Lassnig.
